Modernism in Another Country Ernest Hemingway Essays

Modernism in Another Country Ernest Hemingway Essays Modernism in Another Country Ernest Hemingway Paper Modernism in Another Country Ernest Hemingway Paper Davenport Jessica Period 3 7 March 2011 Have you ever wondered how modernism went along with the novels that were written in that time? Well â€Å"In Another Country† portrays Modernism and The Harlem Renaissance in many different ways. During this period was when WW1 went on from 1914-1918, The Jazz Age which was know as â€Å"The Roaring Twenties†, and The Great Depression, which included The Dust Bowl and The New Deal. This was just some of the few things that happened. With some of the historical events also came some important people. Edna St. Vincent Millay and Dorthy Parker were the two women who celebrated the clash between the traditional and modern values, celebrating youth, independence, and also freedom from social constraints. Also during this time John Steinbeck was the writer who wrote about the despairs that the population was going through during the dust bowl. During the time of the mass production Sinclair Lewis was just one of the few writers who felt he was being alienated by all of the new values and lifestyles. Along with the different types of things happening there were many different topics and ways that the writers wrote things. Most of the novels were about the war that was going on which was known as â€Å"The Great War† or WW1. In the story â€Å"In Another Country† Hemingway was an injured soldier in Milan, he was one of the very first to try out a new machine that was supposed to help injuries. The doctor that was helping him with his leg injury was hopeful that the machines were going to work and Hemingway would be playing football just like he had been doing before the war. Then he meets another soldier who is getting his mangled hand fixed by the same machines and the doctor also promises him that he will be able to return to fencing but this man finds out that his wife has passed away when he was in Milan and he is devastated about it. That is when Hemingway realizes that he did not deserve his medals and his injury was not heroic action but an accident. One way the piece of literature is an example from the period â€Å"The Harlem Renaissance and Modernism 1910-1940 A Changing Awareness†. McDougall Littell Literature: American Literature. The Description of the Federal Reserve and Federal Open Market Committ Term Paper

The Description of the Federal Reserve and Federal Open Market Committee - Term Paper Example It has, therefore, maintained an inflation target of 2%, but it has been below the targeted value (Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System). Fed is concerned of the level of inflation in the country. According to FOMC, the increase in the prices of oil has raised inflation and the expected inflation is targeted to be stable in the long run. To ensure that prices are stable, the Fed has to monitor the rate of inflation to minimize the general tendency of the price increase. The Federal Reserve aims to minimize unemployment by sustaining the current economic growth while maintaining stable prices. It achieves this by mopping out excess money supply when it purchases government securities and bonds. Moreover, Fed believes that unemployment challenges will be addressed by a comprehensive monetary policy. Through the open market operation, the Federal Reserve controls the buying and selling of securities by adjusting the interest rate. Increasing interest rate encourages people to buy while lowering discourages people to buy. However, in this scenario, the Fed has just used the mouth persuasion that it will buy mortgage-based securities and hold to long-term Treasury securities. In the ideal situation, Fed would have lowered the interest attached to these securities to ensure people sell back to avoid low return on investment. The Federal Reserve says that it will go on buying agency securities at a rate of $40 billion every month. This move helps in reducing the money supply from the housing sector to stabilize it after the collapse of the bubble in 2008. Moreover, the Fed aims to increase the grace period by which it holds treasury securities thereby decreases the frequency of injecting money to the economy. Fed also argues for reinventing agency debt along with mortgage securities. These measures Fed says are done to put prevent the rate of interest  rising thus helping the mortgage market and financial institutions.

Advertising Proposal for SONY Online Entertainment LLC Case Study

Advertising Proposal for SONY Online Entertainment LLC - Case Study Example Little of this consumer success radiates on SONY Online Entertainment (SOE) as yet, probably because it was established fairly recently as the online gaming firm of the SONY Corp. of America. Notwithstanding its distinguished corporate lineage, SOE is a fledgling company that needs to position its own brand, broaden its marketing base and overcome the heavy competition in online gaming through innovative thinking and ideas.FGH Associates, a full-service advertising agency, proposes to give SOE top-of-mind consumer recall and preference through a one-year advertising blitz that utilises every major medium - TV, radio, magazines, newspapers, cinema, video games, Internet, billboards - to deliver the message. The message: SOE is the online gaming firm for quality, innovation and delivery. This message will be delivered to the target market through meaningful advertising modules that exude warmth, energy and ingenuity. Advertising is meaningful if it is true-to-life and effective, warm i f gentle and sensitive, energetic if lively and appealing, ingenious if imaginative and silly but clever (McKay, 2005).In adopting an advertising strategy, positioning plays an important part. Positioning a product for a feasible market involves communication, which has become difficult in an "over-communicated" society (Goldman & Papson, 1994). There are just too many companies, too many products, and too much marketing noise such that in the US alone, per capita consumption in advertising is placed at $200 per year. In 2006, adspend worldwide was placed at $385 billion and is expected to reach $500 billion in 2010 (Chowdhury, 1994). Through all this noise, however, a firm can manage if it considers not only its own strengths and weaknesses but also those of its competitors. The easiest way to get into a person's mind is to relate to customers in a personal way (Desmond, 2003) and appeal to emotions in some ways (AllBusiness.com, 2008). This can only be done if the advertiser belie ves in his product. Even the most carefully thought out and highly creative ads would fail to connect if the product is not as good as advertised. The American Research Group (2007) sets 10 rules in making advertising more effective: 1. Tell a simple but good story instead of just purveying information. 2. Make the desired call to action an essential part of the story. 3. Use emotional appeal as basis. 4. Use easy and simple arguments. 5. Show instead of tell the message. 6. Use symbolic languages and images that relate to the senses, 7. Match what viewers see with what they hear. 8. Stay with a scene long enough for more impact. 9. Let a powerful video speak for itself. 10. Use identifiable music. When advertising takes these rules to heart and still fails to sway consumers, it may be worthwhile to follow

Descartes Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words - 1

Descartes - Essay Example Although he decided to doubt everything, at some point the Cartesian method hit  a brick wall. This happens when he himself agrees to settle for an assumption in as far as the existence of God is concerned. He makes an inference by saying that God is infinite and that he cannot conceive a cause by which God is produced, this means that his perception of God is doubtable since he is unable to explain the origin of God (page 117). This explanation does not in any way prove the existence of God. It is probably the weakest argument in his work and which also shows either fear or reluctance on his part to challenge the existence of God. Assuming that he feared to challenge the existence of God, it can be argued that such utterances as to the existence of God may have resulted in severe punishment for him during his time. TheCartesian theory reaches its point of elasticity when Rene Descartes approaches the argument of the existence of God.   The Cartesian theory does not therefore suf fice as an essential school of thought in totality due to the fact that it leaves a rather big loophole to convince the layman and other philosophers how God came into existence. Therefore his view of the existence of God does not satisfy any philosophical urge to explain the existence of God. Philosophy aims to answer questions and set the standards in the way people think and assess situations. Its nature is such that it is critical and rationale. This means that all possible weaknesses have to be nipped in the bud. Positing absolute certainty means that philosophy has to reach an acme beyond which no one can come up with any further argument. Philosophy relies on rational judgment, so any philosophical claim or statement should be critical and based on pure reason and should not lead in circles. Philosophy should have a definite end point, a point which leaves no room for question marks. This is why philosophy must be absolute. However, since it is based on rational judgment, thi s absolute certainty can be difficult to achieve because rational judgment is relative, depending on factors like the environment one grows up in and even the foundations and teachings of one’s faith. It is thus rational to argue that the Cartesian method  does not fully satisfy the philosophical requirements since the existence of God according to this method, though based on rational judgment according to the creator of the theory, leaves many a question unanswered as to the how God came to being, something that even Rene Descartes himself cannot explain satisfactorily. Although the Cartesian method has been criticized by many people, it actually does hold water. It achieved absolute certainty when Rene Descartes argues that he cannot be deceived into thinking that he does not exist, because unless something existed there would be nothing to deceive. This implies that one has to exist so as to be deceived, you cannot deceive that which does not exist. Absolute certainty b ecomes achievable mainly up to the extent of concrete things, those that we can see and touch, but when it comes to abstract matters which are based in thought and ideas, like the existence of God, the answers and explanations put forward in relation to the Cartesian method sometimes do not achieve the threshold required. According to the theory of knowledge by Rene Descartes, natural light or by the light of nature is the clear and distinct perception which emphasizes the nature that has been made by God. Natural light seems like the basis

Imagery and Exceptionalism in New England :: American History Essays

Imagery and Exceptionalism in New England Jonas Clarke, the minister of the Congregational church in Lexington, Massachusetts, entertained guests at his home the evening of April 18, 1775. The two guests that Clarke hosted were seeking a safe haven from British authorities. His guests, Samuel Adams and John Hancock, discussed strategy with Clarke concerning the conflict with Britain as they attempted to keep their location secret from the British. Supposedly, Great Britain planned to capture these two radicals in hopes of terminating the colonial resistance. A messenger on horseback interrupted their meeting, writes Clarke. â€Å"Then came an express in writing stating that eight or nine officers of the king’s troops were seen just before night passing the road toward Lexington, in a musing, contemplative posture, and it was suspected they were out on some evil design.† Adams and Hancock took heed of this advanced warning and escaped Lexington before the redcoats appeared in the town. Clarke knew they woul d be arriving soon, and headed to the village green to help assemble the townspeople for the expected confrontation. As the clock struck 2:00 A.M., the minister helped order the villagers into position. Many on the green were members of his church, and he knew that they were prepared to fight if violence broke out. For weeks, Clarke had groomed his congregation with images of the hardships of their forefathers, and their hopes of a land of freedom, and he was certain that the residents of Lexington would hold fast against the British forces if necessary. After the exchange between the colonists and the redcoats the morning of the nineteenth, seven lay dead on the town square, some of whom were his parishioners. However, Clarke remained positive that this fight was an important one, and that his congregation would continue to support resistance to the British tyranny that now was endemic within the colonies. Jonas Clarke used his sermon as a method of persuasion to garner support for the resistance movement against Great Britain. During his orations, he hoped to invoke a feeling of duty within his congregation. Clarke intended that the sense of duty, in turn, would provoke his listeners to defend America’s rebellion. He used vivid images of the ancient Israelites and the colonists’ ancestors to depict the struggles they encountered in the past. By doing so, Clarke hoped to show his worshippers the exceptionalism of America.

Causes and Effects of Breaking Up Essay

In keeping with my research topic I chose to Wright my cause and effect paper over breaking up. There are many causes why people break up. In everyone life there comes a point and time when they finds one person whom they fall madly in love with. Real life relationships are different what we see in the movies where two people fall in love and go on to live happily ever after. In â€Å"The Real World† rather than â€Å"The Movie World† it is a fact of life that couples do break up, and there are many reasons why. There are many reasons, ranging from cheating to lack of sex to abuse, that make people want to breakup One reason why couples might break up is money or a lack of money. If one person in a relationship is always paying for everything, their partner just might grow tired of it and decide that it is a good reason to separate. For example, a woman who is always giving her boyfriend money for his rent, car note, and other expenses will probably eventually get tired of it and leave him. Growing apart, an instance in which two people just do not feel attraction towards each other anymore is very commonplace, resulting in an end of a relationship. Some couples simply â€Å"fall out of love†. Some people can only stand so much of another person before they grow tired of them. Sometimes a person finds another person besides their boy/girlfriend who they are attracted to. Finding somebody â€Å"better† will end a relationship quickly, and start a new relationship as well. If a person finds someone more attractive than the person they are currently with, they might have to weigh their options and decide that they want to go another direction. Also, breaking up it could be as a result to distance. For example, when I was in high school I met a nice lady friend and we went together for most of that time. As time came and went the both of decided go own ways in choosing colleges. This results in a couple breaking up.
